The Language of Documentary last chance
July 2005
Decades of documentary have produced a range of visual ‘languages’ that contemporary filmmakers can draw on. An awareness and understanding of these languages is a tremendous resource for any filmmaker, whatever their level of experience.
This intensive two-day course will introduce participants to a variety of documentary genres, and explore how they can apply the knowledge gained to their own projects.
Using a combination of theory sessions, case studies, personal stories and practitioner discussions, major documentary styles will be explored and genres from interview based to observational, essay to experimental.
Participants will be guided through a weekend filled with screenings, analysis, guest speakers, case studies and practical exercises. Documentary filmmakers with projects in development are particularly encouraged to apply.

Marsha Emerman is a documentary filmmaker, teacher, writer and programmer.
