We have two FULLY ONLINE screenwriting courses on offer:
Storytelling for Film and Television and Introduction to Screenwriting.
1. Storytelling for Film and Television 14 March to 23 April
If you are looking for an introduction to the building blocks of a film and TV screenwriting, then Storytelling is for you. This lively and fully online five-week course is designed to help writers develop a toolbox of storytelling tricks and techniques from which to build their own stories.
Online courses, AFTRS style, are flexible, convenient and fun and participants of this one will receive individual tuition from course director Dr Kathy Mueller, and content creator Luke Devenish. Kathy is a film director and writer with a range of credits to her name, including Cyclone Tracey, The Magistrate, Girl from Tomorrow and Pig’s Breakfast.
Luke is currently script producer/story editor for Neighbours, one of the world’s most successful television serials and was script executive for the ABC serial Something in the Air, and has written and script-edited shows such as Seachange and RAW FM.

2. Introduction to Screenwriting 9 May to 29 July
If you feel that you have the basics, if you have done a screenwriting course already or if you have experience in storytelling in another medium (a novel, a play) and you have an idea you want to develop in a strong screenplay structure, then Screenwriting is for you.
Screenwriting is an intensive 13-week course is for those who already have a feature film story idea. This course builds on fundamental storytelling devices (such as those introduced in the Storytelling for Film and Television course) and provides techniques for refining premise, protagonist, dramatic problem and plot construction. Part of the process of learning will include interaction with staff, students and guest lecturers. We encourage students to support each other through the systems we have set up. These systems include threaded discussions, chat groups, role-play in virtual environments, and buddy networks.
Course directors: Lisa Dethridge (author of Writing Your Screenplay, Allen and Unwin, 2003) has 20 years’ experience writing for film, television and print in Australia and the US. Lisa has worked for major and independent studios and networks including Fox, Warner, MTV, AFC and ABC. She has also written for publications including Vogue and The Australian, and has taught at the American Film Institute, UCLA, New York University, AFTRS and RMIT and has a PhD. In Media Ecology from New York University.
Kathy Mueller is a film director and writer with a range of credits to her name, including Cyclone Tracey, The Magistrate, Girl from Tomorrow and Pig’s Breakfast.
If you are starting to write a screenplay, the ideal progression is to do both courses back-to-back.
