Overview
With a population of 300, the township of Lake Bolac is located on the shores of, and takes its name from, the scenic 1460 hectare freshwater lake. Lake Bolac is 50 kilometres south of Ararat on the Glenelg Highway, midway between Ballarat and Hamilton. Lake Bolac is perfectly suited to water sports including boating, sailing and wind surfing, and is a popular destination for fishing, with anglers from across Victoria and inter-state descending on the lake.
Due to drought conditions, please speak with Ararat Rural City Council to check the water level of the lake before planning this as your filming location.
History
Lake Bolac was first settled as a farming district in the early 1800s and the town and surrounding region is dotted with stunning bluestone cottages and homesteads built in the mid 1850s. The Lake Bolac Hotel was constructed in 1862 from Bluestone and still services the surrounding township, which has become an agricultural services hub as cropping and other farming activities continue to grow the local economy.
